2015 Lynyrd Skynyrd Documentary

Custom Short Link – sknrd.us/lsdgwtw

In 2015 a new Lynyrd Skynyrd Documentary was released. Gone With The Wind: The Remarkable Rise And Tragic Fall Of Lynyrd Skynyrd is an extremely in-depth look at the history and inside stories of the band.

At almost 2 hours and 45 minutes long, it is a truly detailed dive into all aspects of how the band evolved from the beginning. But it’s not just a rehash of all the typical stories that have made the rounds over the decades.

There are interviews with all of the majors figures that had anything to do with the band from back in the day. Including opinions and commentary from prominent historians and authors. So there is some competent commentary as well as just memory recollections.

It also includes some great vintage footage.

“Ronnie Van Zant was a great songwriter. He was a terrific lyricist…  They put our six albums, 80 to 90% of those songs are absolutely top-grade. It’s amazing!” – (from the film)  Robert Christgau, The Village Voice

Now the film is available to watch on Youtube and has also been released to everal of the streaming platforms. It’s available through Tubi, Vudu, C rackle, Netflix, The Roku Channel, and Apple TV.

Gone With The Wind – Lynyrd Skynyrd Documentary

Best Lynyrd Skynyrd Documentary

It’s hard to say if this is “the best” documentary about Lynyrd Skynyrd. It’s certainly one of the most in-depth and lengthy. I prefer the well-researched and produced documentary tup movies like this as opposed to the re-enactments. Those often to come mostly from one persons memories and point of view. And they often tend to take a little too much artistic license.

This film is written and directed by Tom O’Dell. He is a writer, director, editor, and producer from the UK. He has several significant films under his belt including “Manson: Music From An Unsound Mind.” That sounds like it would be pretty interesting too. O’Dell also Directed a documentary film about the formative years of blues guitar great, Stevie Ray Vaughan.

Back in 2014 when this film was being shot and produce, some of the band members were still with us that have since passed away. namely, Bob Burns and Ed King.

What would have made it even better would have been some insight from Tom Dowd. But unfortunately, he passed away in 2002. Dowd had an enourmous influence on the music business. It’s well worth the time to watch his documentary his documentary: The Language Of Music.

Celebrating 50 Years of Lynyrd Skynyrd

Custom Short Link – sknrd.us/ls50ann

2023 is a landmark year commemorating 50 years of the Lynyrd Skynyrd band. Skynyrd is one of the most iconic classic rock band in music history, and the definition of Southern Rock.

This 50 year mark is calculated from the band’s first major label release.  Skynyrd’s first album, (Pronounced ‘LÄ•h-‘nérd ‘Skin-‘nérd), was released in August of 1973. I suppose that is generally the most logical point to calculate from.

Most Skynyrd fans know that the band existed for a few years before that. They were playing gigs, writing songs, and even recording some early demos.

Lynard Skynard Shade Tree Demos

In 1969 the band went into a local studio in Jacksonville and recorded some of their songs. Most notably Michelle and Need All My Friends. These sessions were so early in their career that the band’s name had not completely evolved yet. The label on the 45 single read, “Lynard Skynard.”

Just a couple years later in the summer of 1971, the band went into the legendary Muscle Shoals, Albama studio and recorded some more songs. These sessions included a very early version of Freebird, as well as Three Steps, Simple Man, and Down South Jukin’.

The sessions also included songs written, or co-written, bu current Skynyrd guitarist, Rckey Medlocke. The demos were shopped around a lot, but ultimately never picked up by any major label.

All of the songs were eventually released on a compilation record in 1978 entitled, “Skynyrd’s First… And Last.” it was then re-released in 1998 as “Skynyrd’s First: The Complete Muscle Shoals Album.”

Gary Rossington, guitarist and lone original member of the band, had been off the road for awhile recovering from some heart and health issues. This show was recorded at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashvile, TN.

Unfortunately, this would be Rossington’s final show with the band.

LYNYRD SKYNYRD FAQ

Custom sharable link – sknrd.us/lsfaq23

June 17, 2023 – An updated Lynyrd Skynyrd Frequently Asked Questions has been needed for some time. The one that I created back in the late 90’s is still out there, and had not been refreshed for many, many years.

I wanted to provide updated answers to some of the questions that were already on the list. I also wanted to add some of the Lynyrd Skynyrd FAQ’s that are out there now. Thousands of times a month people on the internet still search for Skynyrd info, and ask questions about the band and it’s members.

This is my best effort to provide the accurate, updated answers to these questions. If you see anything that you think may be incorrect or you have a question of your own, please send me a message and the information that you may have at info (@) skynyrd.com. Or you can leave a comment below right on this page.

When did Lynyrd Skynyrd first get together?

What would eventually become “Lynyrd Skynyrd” first got together in the summer of 1964. Bob Burns, Gary Rossington and Ronnie VanZant had already begun talking about starting a band. Then they got together with Allen Collins and Larry Junstrom. The five young men began practicing in Bob’s carport and the name they chose for their new band was  “My Backyard” – many different names followed over the next five years.

Original Members of Lynyrd Skynyrd

Lynyrd Skynyrd Frequently Asked Questions:
Who were the original members of Lynyrd Skynyrd?

Technically, the original members were Ronnie Van Zant, Gary Rossington, Bob Burns, Allen Collins, and Larry Junstrom. At this time the band called themselves The One Percent. (See below for other names the band used.) But this was the original members of the band that would eventually become, Lynyrd Skynyrd.

In 1969 the band finally changed the name to Lynyrd Skynyrd. (Also see below for where the name came from.)

What was the band called  before they were Lynyrd Skynyrd?

The first name they used was My Backyard, which was followed by The Noble Five. They also went by other names including Conqueror Worm, Sons of Satan, The Wildcats and finally The One Percent. The band went by the One Percent for several years until 1970.

The Name: Lynyrd Skynyrd

Lynyrd Skynyrd Frequently Asked Questions:
Where did the name Lynyrd Skynyrd come from?
How did Lynyrd Skynyrd get their name?
Where did Lynyrd Skynyrd get their name?

Where did the name Lynyrd Skynyrd come from? The band name, Lynyrd Skynyrd, came froma person’s name, Leonard Skinner. He was a gym coach at Robert E. Lee High School, which the band members attended in Jacksonville. At some point in the 1960s Skinner disciplined Gary and Bob for their  long hair, which was against the dress code.

Even after dropping out of school, the young men remembered all the hassles they received from him. In 1970, while still playing as the One Percent, they had a gig at a local club called the Forest Inn. Ronnie spontaneously said out to the crowd, “Hey, we’re Leonard Skinner and we’re gonna play for y’all tonight.”

Since most everyone there was familiar with Coach Skinner, the name was an instant hit and stuck. Over time, the vowels were changed “to protect the guilty” — as Gary put it at one time.

What caused the Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash?

According to the NTSB report, the tragic plane crash involving the iconic American rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd on October 20, 1977, was attributed to a series of critical factors. The investigation revealed that the pilots had made fuel calculation errors during refueling in Lakeland, Florida on October 18, 1977. These errors were further compounded when they mistakenly believed they had more fuel than was actually available after refueling in Greenville, South Carolina on the 20th.

Furthermore, the aircraft was experiencing mechanical issues that necessitated the pilots to operate the right engine in the “auto-rich” position. This setting caused the engine to consume fuel at an excessive rate, exacerbating the fuel shortage problem. The combination of these factors resulted in the aircraft nearly running out of fuel.

Realizing the severity of the situation, the pilots altered their course and attempted to reach an airport near McComb, Mississippi. However, as fuel depletion became critical, the plane ultimately stalled near Gillsburg, Mississippi, and tragically crashed into swampy woods.

Why was Ronnie’s casket closed at his funeral?

Ronnie Van Zant, the lead singer of Lynyrd Skynyrd, had always expressed his desire for people not to gather and stare at his body after his passing. His wishes were deeply respected by his loved ones, including his widow, Judy, who vividly remembered his words.

Unfortunately, with the passage of time, numerous rumors and tales have surfaced, falsely depicting Ronnie as being severely disfigured or even decapitated in the plane crash. However, it’s important to clarify that these stories are entirely untrue.

In reality, Ronnie had just one bruise on his temple, approximately the size of a quarter. Judy and Lacy both recall seeing him at his funeral, and he appeared peacefully at rest, resembling someone that was just asleep.

Why did Bob Burns leave Lynyrd Skynyrd?

In 1996 or ’97, the then exsistent Freebird Foundation reached out to Burns with the question, and received this response:

“I left the band in 1974 because of my health. I wasn’t feeling good or thinking good at that time. Ronnie never fired me and I never quit, but I just had to leave for my own sake. The touring, the recording, the constant motion was too much. I’m very proud of my contributions though. Even today when I listen to the radio and hear me, I can hardly believe it.”

Bob Burns passed away in April of 2015.

Ballad Of Curtis Loew

Lynyrd Skynyrd Frequently Asked Questions:
Is Ballad Of Curtis Loew a true story?
Was Curtis Loew a real person?

These questions are still being asked decades after the song was released in 1974.

The Ballad Of Curtis Loew was written by Ronnie Van Zant and Allen Collins. It was first released in 1974 on Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Second Helping” album.

One of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s classic songs, The Ballad of Curtis Loew, loosely drew its inspiration from the vibrant characters that resided near Ronnie’s home in Jacksonville’s Westside.

The “country store” portrayed in the song finds its roots in Claude’s Midway Grocery, situated at the intersection of Plymouth and Lakeshore. Claude’s became the backdrop for this musical tale. (NOTE: The building had been abandoned for a few years, and was finally torn down in August of 2021. – Florida Times-Union article)

Although a specific person named Curtis Loew didn’t exist, there were numerous colorful individuals resembling Curtis Loew within the neighborhood. The unique spelling of the name emerged when guitarist Ed King penned the liner notes for the Second Helping album in 1974. In a playful twist, he humorously combined the name of an old Florida black bluesman with the Jewish heritage of Loew’s Theatre, crafting a name that resonated well with the song’s bluesy and soulful essence.

Legends And Icons Lost

Custom Short Link – sknrd.us/wolrip

This post will be focusing on the recent losses of Gary Rossington, Wayne Shorter, David Lindley, and Michael Rhodes. It’s been a rough few weeks lately. We’ve lost icons and legends in the music world at an alarming rate.

We all know that people get older and die. But when it’s our heroes and our influences, it often seems even harder. It makes us nostalgic, and sometimes even more aware of our own mortality.

I’ll start this post with the one that is most relevant to this website and the world of Southern and Classic Rock.

Gary Rossington – 1951 to 2023

Gary Rossington was the final remaining original member of the iconic Southern Rock band, Lynyrd Skynyrd. Rossington met and teamed up with other Skynyrd originals. Ronnie Van Zant, Allen Collins, and Bob Burns in the mid-sixties.

As a member of the first three guitar arsenal, Rossington was very influential on a lot of guitarists, and other musicians, in rock and roll. The creator of many timeless guitar riffs and  melodies, he also co-wrote some of the most classic songs in the history of rock.

Click to watch this video on Youtube.

Most of Skynyrd’s videos on Youtube are locked down and can’t be shared. So take some time and go to YT and reminisce on some old Skynyrd videos.

I wanted to share something like Simple Man, one of his signature guitar licks in the intro. Or That Smell, which Ronnie wrote about the growing drug and alcohol use in the band. The song is mostly about Rossington being wasted and crashing his car into an oak tree. This is where his nickname, “Prince Charming” came from.

And of course there’s the unforgettable slide guitar parts he always did on Freebird that defined one of the most enduring songs in rock and roll history.

As of this writing there has not been a cause of death given, but he had a history of heart and health problems. There’s also been no word yet if the band will continue. They have a tour scheduled with ZZ Top coming up.

Wayne Shorter – 1933 to 2023

For anyone that is a fan of jazz music, likeWayne Shorter - RIP myself, there aren’t many names bigger than Wayne Shorter. He was an innovator for decades, and through several different eras of jazz.

Shorter came to prominence in the late 1950’s with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers. Then it was on to a period of playing with the great Miles Davis.

One of Shorter’s most prominent periods was as a co-founding member of Weather Report. This band blazed new trails in the the era of jazz fusion.

One of their most memorable tunes was Birdland, written by keyboardist, Joe Zawinul.

Shorter received 12 Grammy Awards, as well as many other prestigious recognitions throughout his career. Along with the many bands and projects that he had been a part of, he was recorded 20 albums as a band leader.

David Lindley – 1944 to 2023

David Lindley - RIPProbably the most eclectic and esoteric artist on this unfortunate list is David Lindley. He was certainly not a household name, but I’m pretty sure you have heard his playing more than once.

The most likely place you will have hears his playing is on Jackson Browne’s huge hit from 1977’s, Running On Empty. The signature lap slide guitar part on that song is played by Lindley.

There are not many things in music that can be defined as “definitive” more than this. Watch a video of it here.

Lindley was a true multi-instrumentalist. He preffered to played oddball and wierd guitars, but he also played many different lap slide style guitars, as well as violin, bass, banjo, mandolin, and various traditional instruments from a wide cross section cultures.

Another example of his quirkiness was that he always wore very bold print and “loud” shirts, along with non-matching print pants that always clashed. It was a personal fashion style that earned him the nickname “Prince of Polyester.”

For many years Lindley had his own band, El Rayo-X. I owned most of these albums years ago, yes, actual vinyl albums, and I wore them out.

It was an interesting mix of raggae, rock, and many other world music influences. Lindley’s wide variety of musical interests really made this bands music unique.

I featured a more recent live version of Quarter Of A Man here, becasue it is one of my favorite El Ray-X songs. And it’s great to see such a good live performance of it.

There’s a lot of other David Lindley videos on Youtube, including a good one from Germany in 1981 that features She Took Off My Romeos and Mercury Blues. This one also has an interesting interview of the band as well.

There is also this excellent, full-show video recorded for Rockpalast in 1982. Well worth you time to just put this on and enjoy the whole thing.

Michael Rhodes – 1953 to 2023

Michael Rhodes - RIPLikely the least well-known name on the list of recently departed in bass player Michael Rhodes. Rhodes was a Nashville studio musician and played on albums for a literal who’s who of major artists.

Including Dolly Parton, Hank, Jr, Reba McEntire, Steve Winwood, Kenny Chesney, and just about anyone else you can think of. Rhodes had been a major picker in the Nashville scene for many years.

Probably his most high-profile gig was as the touring bass player for Joe Bonomassa. You can look up his live videos for a lot of great examples of Michael’s playing.

As a feature, I usually try to go for the more obscure but really cool stuff that you’re really glad you ran across or got exposed to. So here’s this…

Around ten to twelve years ago, one of the many bands that Michael Rhodes was a part of was World Famous Headliners. The reason I included this is because it was a bunch of Nashville cats, headed up by the incomparable Big Al Anderson, former guitarist, singer, and songwriter for NRBQ.

While you’re at it, take the time to check out this WFH video of Party Till The Money’s Gone. You won’t be sorry.

These, along with the devastating loss of Jeff beck in January, and the passing of Dean Daughtry, co-founder and keyboardist for the Altlanta Rhythm Section, 2023 has gotten off to a very painful start.

I am purposefully not promoting any merch, CD’s, videos, or downloads in this post because this is meant to be a tribute and remembrance of all of these great musicians.

Their legacies are monumental, and their influences with remain with us all for the rest of our lives.

Gary Rossington Recovering From Heart Surgery

Gary Rossington Recovering From Heart Surgery

Gary Rossington Recovering From Heart Surgery

Johnny Van Zant had a big announcement for the fans at Skynyrd’s show at the Twin Cities Summer Jam, Shakopee, MN on July 22. Gary Rossington had to have emergency heart surgery. Rossington was resting and recovering at home with his family.

Lynyrd Skynyrd posted this video from the show.

Rossington has a history of heart ailments as well as other health complications. And although Lynyrd Skynyrd’s only surviving original member is going to miss a few shows, he has stated that he’s planning on a full recovery, and is anxious to get back on stage.

Per Gary’s wishes and directive, the band will continue their current “Big Wheels Keep On Turnin'” tour which run through Nov 19. As of this writing their next show is Aug 8 in Canton, OH as part of the NFL Hall of Fame celebrations. No announcement yet if Rossington will be back out with the band by then.

In 2016 Rossington released the first music outside of Lynyrd SKynyrd since the 1988 Rossington Band album, Love Your Man. This latest “solo” venture is entitled’ “Take It On Faith.” It received mostly good reviews, but I’m not sure how the sales were.

As a bonus track on this post, here is Good Side Of Good from the album. The song was penned by ZZ Top’s Billy Gibons, and he plays on the track as well. Which becomes pretty immediately obvious.

Lots of great pickers and songwriters on this album, as you would expect. One of the interesting things to me is that former Little Feat drummer Richie Hayward is credited on this album. Hayward passed away in 2010. So some of these tracks must have been in the can for a little while.
