Allen Collins – Biography

Allen Collins, a renowned guitarist, played a pivotal role alongside Ronnie VanZant in the iconic Southern Rock rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd. With his unique and fiery guitar playing style and powerful songwriting abilities, Collins contributed significantly to the enduring legacy of Lynyrd Skynyrd in the history of rock and roll.

This short, biographical tribute to Collins, provides insights into his early life, musical journey, tragic incidents, and his enduring impact on the world of music.

Early Life and Passion for Music:

Born on July 19, 1952, at St. Lukes Hospital in Jacksonville, Florida, Allen Collins displayed a boundless energy and enthusiasm from an early age. Even before he could walk, Collins was constantly in motion. Fascinated by cars, particularly race cars, he spent his summers watching races at Jacksonville Raceway, often pretending to race his own car from the stands. This early fascination with cars stayed with him throughout his life, as he became an avid collector of collectible and performance vehicles. Allen Collins 1964In 1963, while living in Jacksonville’s Cedar Hills area, Collins discovered his passion for music when an older friend received a guitar as a birthday gift. Instantly captivated, Collins persuaded his mother, Eva, to buy him his first Silvertone guitar and amplifier from Sears. With minimal training, Collins quickly learned to play the guitar and formed his first band, The Mods. It was during this time that Collins met Ronnie VanZant and Gary Rossington, with whom he would later form the core of Lynyrd Skynyrd.

The Formation of Lynyrd Skynyrd:

Collins, along with VanZant and Rossington, laid the foundation for Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1964. Learning from each other and drawing inspiration from radio hits, the band initially went by various names such as My Backyard and the Noble Five. With the addition of drummer Bob BurnsAllen Collins Wedding Picture - 1970 and bassist Larry Junstrum, they embarked on their musical journey, practicing wherever they could find space. After several years of honing their skills and lineup changes, Lynyrd Skynyrd began playing gigs, gradually gaining recognition. In 1970, Lynyrd Skynyrd caught the attention of music producer Al Kooper during a performance in Atlanta. This led to a record deal with MCA subsidiary Sounds of the South and the release of their debut album, “Pronounced Leh-nerd Skin-nerd.” The album showcased their hit songs such as “Gimme Three Steps,” “Simple Man,” and the legendary guitar-driven anthem, “Freebird.” Subsequent albums and songs like “Sweet Home Alabama” and “Saturday Night Special” further solidified their place in rock music.
Allen Collins - 1970However, tragedy struck on October 20, 1977, when the band’s chartered plane crashed in a Mississippi swamp. The accident claimed the lives of Ronnie VanZant, guitarist Steve Gaines, vocalist Cassie Gaines, road manager Dean Kilpatrick, and severely injured the rest of the band and crew. This tragic event marked the end of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s meteoric rise.

After a period of recovery, Collins, along with other survivors, embarked on a new musical endeavor. Forming the Rossington-Collins Band in the early 1980s, they released the album “Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere,” which achieved commercial success. Their first album, Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere, sold more than a million copies, and yielded the hit singles, Don’t Misunderstand Me, and Getaway.

Despite subsequent challenges and lineupAllen Collins Band changes, Collins continued to create music, forming the Allen Collins Band in 1983. Pulling together some of the best musicians from the Jacksonvile, FL music scene, this band prepared to record and album and get back on the road. Allen had originally wanted the name of the band to be Horsepower, but not long after the artwork was completed for the new album cover they discovered that the name was already being used.

Collins faced personal tragedies, including the loss of his wife Kathy in the early days of the Rossington Collins Band and a life-altering car accident in 1986, which left him paralyzed from the waist down.

Despite these hardships, Collins remained dedicated to music, serving as the musical director during the 1987 Lynyrd Skynyrd Tribute tour. He used his platform to raise awareness about the dangers of drunk driving, fulfilling his legal obligations and leaving a powerful impact on his fans.

Allen Collins’s contributions to Lynyrd Allen Collins and Family - 1977Skynyrd’s music and his remarkable guitar skills continue to resonate with fans around the world. His untimely passing on January 23, 1990, marked the end of an era, but his influence on rock music remains timeless, forever etched in the hearts of those who appreciate his extraordinary talent and enduring spirit.

Eric Clapton And Jeff Beck – Moon River

Eric Clapton and Jeff Beck are two of the most famous guitarists in Rock history. Clapton is definitely one of the most influential. And Beck has always been one of the most iconic.

Both of these legendary artists have some history with Lynyrd Skynyrd, Clapton being the most notable. But we’ll get to that in a bit.

These guitar players got together not long ago to cover an old standard, originally made famous by Andy Williams in 1961.  Here’s some info about the track from Clapton’s Youtube Channel:

“Moon River,” recorded not long before Jeff’s tragic passing, is now available on all streaming platforms. This release comes ahead of a series of Jeff Beck tribute shows at Royal Albert Hall in London. The double A-side “Moon River” and new song “How Could We Know” featuring Judith Hill, Simon Climie, and Daniel Santiago will be released on 7″ vinyl July 14, 2023.

Clapton and Beck’s history goes back to the 60’s as well. They’re both Brits, born around the same time, and spent their childhoods within 20 minutes of each other.

This interesting incidence of Classic Rock history also included Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page, who was born around the same time, and lived in the same area.

Clapton’s early music career found him as the guitarist in the British rock band The Yardbirds. Clapton left that band and Jeff Beck replaced him in that roll.

Jeff Beck passed away in January of 2023 at the age of 78. His musical legacy is enormous, and he had garnered and influenced millions of fans around the world.

Lynyrd Skynyrd And Eric Clapton

Most Skynyrd fans are familiar with the memorable concert review article from 1974, when the band opened for Clapton at the Memphis Memorial Stadium in June of that year.

Skynyrd had been added to the bill because they were very popular in Memphis, and apparently, the show promoters were a bit sceptical of how Clapton would be received since his newer material at the time had seen him moving away from his original, bluesier roots.

All of the Skynyrd band members were fans of Clapton, and no doubt saw this as a huge opportunity. It is reported that Ronnie even said so in some of his remarks between songs during their set.

The show resulted in several review articles that pretty much agreed that Lynyrd Skynyrd was the show’s big hit. The most memorable was the article from Sounds Magazine with the lofty title: “Skynyrd Singe God’s Beard In Memphis.”

One of the most amazing things to remember is that Skynyrd was still a very new band at that time, from a national exposure aspect. Their sophomore album, Second Helping, had just been released a few months earlier, and Sweet Home Alabama was just beginning to climb the charts.

That is a testament to how good the original band really was back then. And there are other examples.

Lynyrd Skynyrd and Eric Clapton are also linked by the fact that they both covered songs written by the inestimable, and arguably underrated, songwriter, JJ Cale.

Allen Collins ’58 Gibson Korina Explorer

Original Skynyrd guitarist, Allen Collins was a huge Eric Clapton Fan. Allen had used Gibson Explorers and Firebirds over the years. No doubt from seeing his guitar hero playing them when he was younger.

Only a couple years after this show, Allen was able to make one of his dreams come true when he had the chance to purchase Eric’s 1958 Gibson Korina Explorer. It was his main guitar for several years after that.

This guitar was already exceptional because it was made during the original run of Explorers by Gibson in 1958. Korina is a very exotic wood, and not very many of them were made that year.

Being owned, and played by both Eric Clapton and Allen Collins make it even more exceptional. The last I knew, this guitar was still on display at the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame.

Lynyrd Skynyrd And Jeff Beck

Jeff Beck and Lynyrd Skynyrd at the Cape Cod Coliseum 1976

The band crossed paths with Jeff Beck in 1976, when they did a show together at the Cape Cod Coliseum. There was a CD of this show released from the Japanese label, Breakdown in 2009.

It seems that this CD is somewhat rare as well. It’s a little weird in that the cover image shows Jeff Beck and The Jan Hammer Group playing and they are setup in front of the headliner’s backline. This would indicate that Beck was the opener.

But the track listing on the back shows Beck as the headliner and Skynyrd as the opener. It’s possible that the cover image is not from that particular show.

Lynyrd Skynyrd Guitarist Allen Collins

Custom Short Link – sknrd.us/toactb

As one of the original members of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allen Collins is very well-known among Southern Rock enthusiasts. But because of his well-crafted, memorable guitar solos, he is also known as one of the best guitarists in Rock and Roll history.

In March of 2023 a video was released featuring one of Colins’ best friends reminiscing about the musician, who passed away in January of 1990, and showing a lot of his memorabilia.

Steve Reynolds is the man’s name, and he still lives in the area just south of Jacksonville, FL where Colins, and other Skynyrd members lived, after the band had begun to get some notoriety.

“He (Collins) had a party at his house and they were all doing drugs, or whatever, and somebody said “I wonder, is that the real record that y’all recorded in there?” And he’s like, “I don’t know.” So they broke it and put it on a record player to see if it would play.”

Allen Collins was pretty notorious for the parties that he threw at his house. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the parties and the type of people that hung around with him, a lot of stuff was stolen.

But for fans of Lynyrd Skynyrd, and Collins, this is a pretty interesting video. Lots of stories, interesting pictures, and even vintage instruments, gear, and old road cases from different bands Collins toured with.

This video is from The Griff Martin Files Youtube channel. (You can view part two of the interview with Mr Reynolds here.)

Griff Martin co-hosts The Stoned Roadie Show with legendary Skynyrd roadie, and former Tour Manager, Craig Reed. Martin is also a retired NASA employee and features some aviation videos on his channel.

Allen Collins was indeed one of the most original guitarists in rock and roll from the ’70’s and 80’s, but he was a tragic figure as well. He experienced several traumatic episodes in his short life.

There are many stories about how Allen was sought out by Ronnie Vanzant, Bob Burns, and Gary Rossington to be in the band when it first formed. Several of Collins’ guitar solos are standards still being played on classic rock radio stations.

As a result of a car accident in 1986, Collins was paralyzed from the waist down and was no longer able to tour. He passed away in January 1996 of complications from his paralysis.

Allen Collins was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, with his other Lynyrd Skynyrd bandmates in 2006.

I don’t often add stuff to this site that includes myself, but when something pops up on Youtube that you’re playing on, well, that’s kind of a special feeling. At least for us just regular guys.

From 2002 – 2008 I had the pleasure of running around the country playing with Bill Wharton, aka The Sauce Boss. Every year for the first 2-3 weeks of December we would head north from Florida and do a string of gigs from Washington DC to NY state into PA and elsewhere. I dubbed it “The Frozen Tundra Tour.”

One of our regular stops was the legendary Moondog’s Pub, just outside Pittsgurgh in Blawnox, PA. Moondog’s was always an awesome place to play, but this night was a little extra special. We had our good friend, Warren ‘Kingfish’ King sitting in with us.

Big Dog was the show opener, so the gumbo was not fired up yet. But you can tell this was just the beginning of another night of cookin live music at one of the best spots around.

The Sauce Boss is still out playing music and going strong. Find a date when he will be near you and go check him out. You need some gumbo!

And be sure to visit Planet Gumbo, Bill’s “non-profit organization, whose purpose is to “bring uplifting music and hearty gumbo to homeless shelters and soup kitchens, and to raise awareness about the issues of homelessness.” I had the pleasure of playing many of these shows with him and they were the most fulfilling and fun shows that we did. Find it on Faceebook too and support Planet Gumbo.

Warren King was orignally from Pittsburgh, PA, and was a very well-known guitarist, songwriter, recording engineer, and much more. In the 90’s through the early 2000’s, Warren was an engineer and studio musician at Kingsnake studios in Sandford, FL. A steady stream of national and legendary blues and southern music artist recorded at Kingsnake, and it was also a subsidiary record label for Alligator Records and Ichiban Records.
