Marcus King Band – Side Door

Marcus King Band – Side Door

Marcus King has been making a pretty big splash for a few years now. It’s interesting to see a young artist like this progress, improve and branch out. He’s on 23, born in Greenville, SC, and he is definitely on an upward trajectory.

The Marcus King Band is out on the festival tour every year now, and this track is from the Telluride Blues and Brews Festival in 2018.

Visit The Marcus King Band’s website, and find them on social media: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube.
Marcus King’s dad is also a guitar player. Marcus considers his dad, Marvin, as one of his major influences. Marvin’s band The Marvin King Revue plays around Greenville, SC, their hometown.

Marvin tells the story about playing music with his dad and how hard it was was for a long time to look at his dad’s guitar after he died. So he decided to give Big Red to Marcus.

“He’s doing so well. Why make the kid wait until I kick the bucket? Just give it to him now.”

We’re glad you did, Mr King. Thank you!

RIP Roy Clark, Nov 15, 2018

Roy Clark was a consummate musician and some would say an under-rated guitar player. If you take a look around at some of the many videos out there you’ll quickly see that Clark was one of the best pickers out there.

It was interesting that just a week or so ago I had been prompted by something I read or saw online and had been reading and watching some videos about Mr Clark. Then just a few days later, Nov 15, 2018, he passed away. So there has been a lot of in memoriam articles and videos out there. Most of them pretty predictable songs and performances.

Well, I came across this awesome video and just had to put it out there. It’s from Hee Haw, which Roy Clark was a co-host of for many years, in 1979. It features Clark and Gatemouth Brown playing “Take The A Train.” Gatemouth brown y’all! On Hee Haw in 1979!! Enjoy

Turns out there are several more Roy Clark and Gatemouth Brown videos to take a look at.

Ed King “Guitar Collection” Interview

With the recent passing of guitar legend Ed King (August 22, 2018), I wanted to post something in his honor. I came across this interview and couldn’t tun it off before it was over.

Entitled “Ed King’s Guitar Collection” I wasn’t expecting a whole lot. I’m a drummer, but I like guitars as much as the next guy. But a 30 something minute video of just wandering through a room of guitars talking about their history and provenance… sorry, but that just isn’t compelling. But that’s not what this is!

They only show or talk about three guitars in this video and it’s all while playing them and Ed telling stories about which Skynyrd song it was and how it came about. It’s pretty awesome. So sit back for a bit and enjoy one of the greatest guitar players and riff-makers there’s ever been. Ed King!

Ed King was one of the original guitar players for classic Southern Rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd. He wrote the iconic guitar riff in the intro of Sweet Home Alabama, as well as many other classic and unforgettable Skynyrd Songs.

The interview is part of Marty Schwartz Guitar Tour Series.

Sweet Home Alabama was Ed King’s most recognizable and enduring guitar lick. Here’s the Original band performing it in Hamburg, Germany, 1974.
