Out of Rome, GA, about 70 miles NW of Atlanta, The Georgia Thunderbolts were formed in 2015. I came across TGT from a concert poster I saw online. They just did a New Year’s Eve show opening for Backberry Smoke.
They’re firmly rooted in the classic Southern Rock style, but also list as their influences – Southern Gospel to Hank Williams (doesn’t specify Sr. or Jr.) to Ozzy Osbourne.
TIP: If you like finding new music to listen to, take a look at concert posters online and check out the opening acts. (Remember, Skynyrd opened for The Who on a tour in 1973. Imagine being able to find them before they made it big!) Also, find festival posters and look up the acts that are scheduled ealier in the day. You’ll come across some great new bands, and they can use the support.
Georgia Thunderbolts recorded and released a self-titled EP in 2020. October of 2021 saw there first full-length album release – “Can We Get A Witness.”

I kept thinking to myself, “aren’t there some famous bands that came out of Rome, GA?” But the only ones I could come up with were The Sloppy Meateaters. I guess I got Rome mixed up with Athens. Easy to do, right? There’s a shitload of famous bands from Athens, GA.
The Georgia Thunderbolts are on Mascot Records. Their album was engineered by, and they are managed by Richard Young of The Kentucky Headhunters. TGT have received praise already from No Depression roots music journal. As well as Rolling Stone and Classic Rock Magazine.
