Allen Collins Band – Rare Live Footage From 1983
Custom Short Link – sknrd.us/acblf83
The Allen Collins Band was a short-lived project that was only together from 1983-1984. It came together shortly after the demise of the Rossington Collins Band due to personal issues, mainly from Allen Collins erratic behavior.
The Allen Collins Band consisted basically of the same members as Rossington Collins, but without Gary and Dale Rossington.
Due to the brief existence of this project there is not a lot of live footage to let us see what this band was like live and the presence and dynamics the group possessed.
I’ve cued the video to begin when the music starts. There is a few minutes of prvious video from an interview apparently associated with this performance. Along with some other stuff.
But the music and performance is what we’re most interested in.
If you want to view the earlier portion as well, just drag the timeline back to the beginning. Be Advised: The earlier portion of this video footage is NSFW! There is some language you wouldn’t want to hear blasting from your computer at work.
“It don’t matter what I do or say you’re gonna take it the wrong way. You’re in a trouble finding mood.
But I see right through you try to blame your lies on me. ’Cause in your eyes I’m just trouble” –Allen Collins Band, ‘Just Trouble’

Details and Thoughts
The Allen Collins Band released one LP in their time together. The album was entitled, “Here, There, and Back, and the lineup was essentially the Rossington Collins Band but without Gary and Dale Rossington.
A couple Jacksonville regulars, both very good, had stepped in to complete this version of the band. Randall Hall on guitar and Jimmy Dougherty on vocals. Hall eventually became Allen Colins hand-picked replacement in 1987’s Lynyrd Skynyrd Tribute Tour.
Dougherty was also a known name in the Jacksonville, FL region, and sang with many bands.
The band members are: Allen Collins, guitars; Barry Lee Harwood, guitars; Randall Hall, guitars, Billy Powell, keyboards; Leon Wilkeson, bass & harmony vocals, Derek Hess, drums, Jimmy Dougherty, vocals.
Pretty much everyone in the band is in on songwriting at some point on this album. It was recorded at the legendary Studio One in Doraville, GA.
Overall I’ve always thought that this is a pretty strong album. If you haven’t heard it you better take a listen and start adding these tracks to your playlist.
It’s great to have at least a little footage of this band to experience so many years later. It’s a shame they couldn’t stay together longer to have given us more music to enjoy.
Allen Collins Merch & Memorabilia
If you’re a die-hard Allen Collins fan, Lynyrd Skynyrd fan, Southern Rock or are just into cool merch and memorabilia, I looked around and found some great items to take a look at.
There’s a couple cool T shirts featuring Allen Collins. One featuring Allen alone is a classic image of him with his Gibson Explorer atop the Lynyrd Skynyrd logo. A second great looking T shirt is of Collins and Gary Rossington from Skynyrd’s early days.
You can also pick up a copy of the Allen Collins Band album, Here, There and Back, in a variety of formats. If you’re into vinyl there are vintage copies of the album available. Are you a collector? You can find some great deals on sealed copies of the LP record. There’s also copies of the album out there in cassette tape and compact disc forms.
A very cool one is the 25th Anniversary CD Edition. This was released by Roll For Rock, the charity foundation that was started by Collins. This CD is remastered and was issued in 2008.
