Gary Rossington Recovering From Heart Surgery

Johnny Van Zant had a big announcement for the fans at Skynyrd’s show at the Twin Cities Summer Jam, Shakopee, MN on July 22. Gary Rossington had to have emergency heart surgery. Rossington was resting and recovering at home with his family.

Lynyrd Skynyrd posted this video from the show.

Rossington has a history of heart ailments as well as other health complications. And although Lynyrd Skynyrd’s only surviving original member is going to miss a few shows, he has stated that he’s planning on a full recovery, and is anxious to get back on stage.

Per Gary’s wishes and directive, the band will continue their current “Big Wheels Keep On Turnin'” tour which run through Nov 19. As of this writing their next show is Aug 8 in Canton, OH as part of the NFL Hall of Fame celebrations. No announcement yet if Rossington will be back out with the band by then.

In 2016 Rossington released the first music outside of Lynyrd SKynyrd since the 1988 Rossington Band album, Love Your Man. This latest “solo” venture is entitled’ “Take It On Faith.” It received mostly good reviews, but I’m not sure how the sales were.

As a bonus track on this post, here is Good Side Of Good from the album. The song was penned by ZZ Top’s Billy Gibons, and he plays on the track as well. Which becomes pretty immediately obvious.

Lots of great pickers and songwriters on this album, as you would expect. One of the interesting things to me is that former Little Feat drummer Richie Hayward is credited on this album. Hayward passed away in 2010. So some of these tracks must have been in the can for a little while.
