Ronnie Van Zant T Shirt

The iconic image of Ronnie Van Zant onstage is him singing, holding a microphone in its stand… and wearing a T shirt. And there are some he often wore that are nearly as iconic as the images of him themselves.

By all accounts, Ronnie was a pretty uncomplicated guy. He loved hanging out at home and fishing when they were off the road. Even after they had achieved success and worldwide fame, he still wore T shirts and jeans.

Whenever the band performed, Ronnie always went on stage barefoot. A Simple Man, you might say.

Muscle Shoals Sound T Shirt

All three of these shirts that we see Ronnie in so often had a discernible significance to him. First, ShowCo was the sound company that was on the road with the Original Lynyrd Skynyrd band for years.  I kind of always figured that he got them from the crew when the band was on the road.

We’ve heard from people through the years how attentive and in-tune Van Zant was with everything that was going on. (Listen to Mark Howard’s reflections of Ronnie as a person.) So it’s not unreasonable to think that he probably knew all of the crew that was out on tour with him. Hence, the Swag.

Second, The infamous “fued” between Skynyrd and Neil Young gave Ronnie the opportunity to stir the pot a bit with fans and press. No doubt that was why he wore the Neil Young T shirt so much.

Third, Muscle Shoals Alabama played a very important role in Skynyrd’s early history. They recorded their first “professional” demos there. And they maintained a relationship with the studio throughout the years. Tom Dowd, who produced some Skynyrd’s albums had a very long and storied working relationship with Muscle Shoals Sound Studio as well.
