Blackberry Smoke has been out on the road a bunch in 2021. No doubt making up for time lost to Covid and it’s resultant restrictions in 2020. And all of us fans are glad to have them, and all of our other favorite bands back on the road, on the stage, and delivering us the live music we love to experience.

A lot of their dates this year have been on the festival circuit, so the concert bill consists of lots of different bands. But they’ve also done a lot of headline shows, with different support acts (openers). On the show in this video from August 21 in Alpharetta, GA, they shared the stage with The Wild Feathers. For the encore at the end of Blackberry Smoke’s set they brought their friends back out to the stage, and performed the Lynyrd Skynyrd classic, Tuesday’s Gone.

BBS has been playing Tuesday’s gone for quite a long time, so there are several versions of it on Youtube. Performed by just the band, and together with a few other bands. Most of these types of videos are shot by fans in the crowd at the show, and the quality is usually sub-par. But I have to give proper credit for the video in this post. It was posted by Memnoch’s Broken Record. And for just a phone held up during the show, I’m assuming that’s what it is, it’s not too bad. Be sure to check out the Youtube channel.

They actually do a lot of cool covers, And they are always great songs that they know their fans will love. (One of my favorites is their cover of Fairies Wear Boots.)

Tell us what you think about Blackberry Smoke. Been to one of their shows recently? Bought one of their albums or listend to thier music lately? Let me know in the comments section below.

Blackberry Smoke released their latest album, You Hear Georgia, on May 28, 2021. Be sure to support them by picking up a copy.

Lynyrd Skynyrd Live Asbury Park 1977 was one of the shows on the long and grueling tour for the band that year. The 1977 Tour began in January, and had a relentless schedule through most of that year.

Skynyrd had just finished up the European leg of the tour, the last of 21 shows being in Hamburg, Germany on March 1. There had been a short, 5 show Asian Tour before that, with all of the shows being in Japan.

The North American leg of the tour kicked off on April 22, in Johnson City, TN at the Freedom Hall Civic Center. They were still promoting and touring behind the release of their highly acclaimed live album, One More From The Road. It was released in September, 1976.

Their previous studio album, Gimme Back My Bullets, had just been released in February, 1976, less than a year before this tour started. It was the only album that Lynyrd Skynyrd released that had only two guitar layers. Those being original members Gary Rossington, and Allen Collins.

“Bullets” was recorded after Guitarist Ed King Left the band, and before the addition of Steve Gaines. Skynyrd was at the peak of their popularity, and definitely as strong as every sound and performance-wise.

This show was towards the end of the North American leg of the tour. After the Asbury Park 1977 show they would have about 5 weeks off the road before going back out for another stretch of shows.

This concert was on July 13 at the Convention Hall in Asbury Park, New Jersey.

Lynyrd Skynyrd 1977 Lineup

This was the last line-up of the band and they were pretty much on fire with the recent addition of Steve Gaines as the third guitarist. Steve was the brother of Honkette member, Cassie Gaines.

Members include: Ronnie VanZant, Gary Rossington, Allen Collins, Steve Gaines, Billy Powell, Leon Wilkeson, Artimus Pyle. And background singers The Honkettes: Leslie Hawkins, JoJo Billingsley, and Cassie Gaines.

Asbury Park 1977 Setlist

The setlist for this show, and for most of the tour since Skynyrd didn’t change their song list much, was mostly from their earlier albums. Containing several already classics, and fan-favorites.

Three songs were included from the upcoming album, Street Survivors, scheduled to be released in October of that year. The list contained no songs from their most recent studio album, Gimme Back My Bullets.

Every now and then we still see some new, not seen  or heard stuff come out on the internet. I ran across this audio from Skynyrd in 1973 and thought it was pretty cool. Maybe it’s been out there for awhile, I don’t know, but I wasn’t hip to it until just recently.

Their debut major label album, (Pronounced ‘Lĕh-‘nérd ‘Skin-‘nérd), had just been released in mid-August of ’73 and the couple years or so before that they had bouncing around some clubs in Atlanta mostly. And the “Pronounced…” tour, their first major concert tour, ran from early October through the end of the year. For 11 shows of this tour, Nov 20 through Dec 6, Skynyrd was the opening act for The Who, who was out on their “Quadrophenia” tour.

This audio is purportedly from the second of two nights at The Forum in Inglewood, CA

The audio is lousy and sounds like it was just recorded on a portable cassette deck. But it is still pretty fun and interesting to hear. Of course this is the original line up and there is an energy and freshness to it probably because they weren’t burnt out and broke down from being on the road too long yet.

Wikipedia has the dates from that tour (check out the insane schedule bands used to do back then!) and the typical set list. Opening for a major world-wide act, you usually only get about 35 – 40 minutes. So this is pretty short.

There’s video of the band  from years after this, 1974 even. But this is the earliest I have heard and gives us a good sample of what it was like when they had just broken out and started doing the major tours and venues.

RARE: Danny Joe Brown Band 1981

Danny Joe Brown was the original singer for Molly Hatchett. He and the band both were from Jacksonville, FL, and epitomized that rough, hard-working, hard style of Southern Rock. A couple years after Hatchet had made it big, Brown left for undetermined but highly rumored reasons, and shortly after started his own eponymously named band.

There’s really not any footage of DJB live out there so I was happy to see an old friend of mine, that was in the band, post this video on Youtube earlier this year. Apparently, from one of the comments, the person that posted it was part of a TV crew that was at the festival and just happened to turn his camera on while they were backstage for a bit. They quickly had to leave to head back to the studio. But in the process, we got almost 5 minutes of Danny Joe Brown Band footage we would never had seen.

The Danny Joe Brown Band album was recorded in Nassau, Bahamas. And was produced by the legendary, Glyn Johns. From what I’ve read and been told by a couple people that were there, it was pretty crazy. Let’s just say that the focus was not entirely on recording the music.

If you’re into the history of stuff like this, there’s pretty good piece from 2014 on the Folio Weeekly site about “The War Over Molly Hatchet.” It a lot like many other band’s stories. Personality clashes, excess, people leaving and coming back, people hating each other. It’s a pretty good read, and accurate from what little I know.
